Bio: Chelsea Villegas is a mixed media encaustic painter born and raised in central NJ. From a young age she was in touch with her creativity and had a deep curiosity about the workings of the world and the people around her. Chelsea went on to study painting at the University of Delaware despite a nagging sense of doubt about the practical usefulness of an art degree. There was just no denying that art was her calling. After graduation, using books as a guide, she began exploring encaustic painting and found the combination of drawing, collage, oil paint and beeswax to be the most exciting and modern method of expressing her artistic vision.
In 2007 her son was born followed by a daughter in 2008. Being a home schooling mother to two young children with an unsupportive and emotionally abusive spouse did not allow for much outward creative expression. Still she remained committed to fanning the flames of her inner growth and held on to the knowing that she would return to her art at some point. Following an extremely difficult time of transition after leaving her marriage, she found solace and inspiration in returning to the studio and used her art as a means to reconnect with the buried parts of herself and heal some of the painful emotions and experiences from the previous decade. Her paintings and personalized portrait commissions are multi-layered and rich with emotion and symbolism. Her interest in nature, travel, books, spirituality, and personal growth create a tapestry of imagery and ideas which she weaves together to create paintings that leave the viewer in touch with a more soulful and contemplative realm.
